ModBlog: PH 9.0 – PH 9.0X – PH 9.0XT…the upgrade path.

ModWright began as a company offering upgrade solutions. We know the value and cost/benefits of product improvements. We designed the PH 9.0 tube phono stage with this upgrade path in mind.

The PH 9.0 design was based on the PH 150 Reference tube phono stage. We set out to design a phono stage with the spirit and performance of the PH 150, in a more affordable and attainable product. Most of the design intent was kept. Cost savings were achieved by revising the   enclosure design and judicious use of less costly materials for the enclosure.

The result is the PH 9.0 tube phono stage with a point of entry starting at $3500 and options to upgrade to the 9.0X, 9.0XT and ultimately move up to the PH 150 as your system grows in resolution and refinement.

“I already own a PH 9.0. What actually changes as I move to X… or XT?”

This article explains the design approach behind the PH 9.0 upgrade path, from original PH 9.0 through the PH 9.0X and ultimately the PH 9.0XT.

A Core ModWright Principle: Build Forward, Not Over

From the beginning, the PH 9.0 was designed with performance and longevity in mind.

The enclosure is steel with minimalist aluminum face plate and analog toggle switches. NO backlit logo, just clean simple graphics. The enclosure is smaller at 10”W x 10”D x 4”H. The external power supply is 7”W x 9”D x 3”H and is tethered via 6ft long umbiiical.

Functional, elegant and design forward. Conserving space to suit a modern world and allowing for flexibility of setup and installation.

Rather than design an entirely new phono stage, we took the Reference PH 150 as the starting point and offered an upgrade path to our Reference offering.

The PH 9.0, PH 9.0X, and PH 9.0XT are not different products.
They are a continued refinement of an excellent core design.

The PH 9.0: A Musical Foundation

The original PH 9.0 established the performance and character that defines this product line today.

  • Low Noise
  • Flexible loading and controls
  • Natural tonal balance
  • Strong bass control
  • Detail, speed and dynamics

We sell many PH 9.0 phono stages to those looking for their first good tube phono. It is THE entry point to high performance analog audio.

That foundation is never discarded.

From PH 9.0 to PH 9.0X: Lowering Noise, Increased resolution and tightened bass response.

The transition from PH 9.0 to PH 9.0X is where the biggest improvements become apparent and most of the spirit of the PH 150 Reference tube phono stage is realized.

This step focuses on:

  • Reducing noise floor
  • Increasing gain (6dB)
  • Improving resolution and bass impact.
  • Adding fully balanced XLR operation.

Our customers tell us that they hear more of everything with the X upgrade.

The character of the sound doesn’t change, but the resolution and impact do.

This is often the point where low-output moving-coil cartridges begin to show what they are truly capable of and the 6dB increase in gain is advantageous.

The  Lundahl output transformers used in the X upgrade bring the strength of inductive coupling, with its inherent increase in body, weight, bass control and impact.

This upgrade also eliminates output coupling capacitors, allowing for a pure and phase accurate output signal.

From PH 9.0X to PH 9.0XT: Soundstage, body and bloom

The addition of Improvements at this level affect:

  • A bigger and fuller sound
  • Improved sense of ease and musical flow
  • Broader and deeper soundstage
  • Greater level of resolution and natural sound

Our customers often describe the XT as sounding less constrained, especially during complex passages or at realistic listening levels.

Importantly, this is not about making the sound brighter, sharper, or more “detailed.” Rather, the tube rectifier adds organic richness and natural tone to very high signal resolution.

It’s about allowing the music to flow, naturally and organically.

Why These Changes Are Incremental — and Intentional

Some companies sell new products to replace last year’s model.

We offer a way to improve your existing ModWright product and upgrade without purchasing a new unit. We believe it makes more sense to upgrade what is already a great design.

Each step in the PH 9.0 upgrade path marks a distinct improvement in sound that we at ModWright can stand firmly behind.

That’s why:

  • There is no cost penalty to upgrade over time.
  • Many listeners find their “endgame” at different points
  • The PH 9.0XT is not mandatory to enjoy reference-level vinyl

Every stage in this path is musically complete.

Choosing Where You Belong on the Path

Here is what we recommend to a new buyer:

  • If your system is well balanced and deeply musical, the PH 9.0 may be just what you need.
  • If your cartridge and system resolution have increased and you want fully balanced XLR outputs, the PH 9.0X reveals meaningful sonic improvements and increased gain for low output MC cartridges.
  • If your system is highly resolving and you value ease, density, and realism above all else, the PH 9.0XT is the next logical step or ideal purchase.

None of these choices are end-game purchases. They are about a path to improved sound and refinement that grows with you on your path to ideal sound.

Looking Ahead: The Full Picture

Understanding the PH 9.0 upgrade path is the first step.

The next natural question becomes:

“Where does the PH 9.0XT fit relative to the PH 150?”

We’ll explore that relationship soon, defining different approaches to reference-level vinyl playback.

For Now

If you currently own a PH 9.0 or PH 9.0X — or are considering a new phono stage — please contact us or your nearest ModWright dealer to discuss upgrade options.

There is no “correct” destination.
Only the one that fits you, your system and your listening tastes best.
